on geese
I think the animals we humans have decided we don’t like, are “assholes” or a “nuisance” says so much more about us than the animal species
(on the flip side: dogs. I love dogs and I love humans who love dogs! but think about it…)
I looove geese
I get emotional each time I see them overhead, usually hearing them first. INCREDIBLE
and my heart aches when I see a lone goose
tugging on the part of me that feels lost, alone, without my flock. trying to find my way to somewhere home, without safe passage in numbers, taking turns at the exertion of leading, directing.
My chest swells too
when I see their proud stance
holding their ground
not giving a flying fuck (😏) that they are in the bike lane, or car lane, or anywhere else humans have claimed as theirs alone.
It’s pure delight when I sit calmly and quietly on the river bank in spring, the parents herding their young nibbling on the cottonwood seeds and other shore treats. One parent is always eying me keenly - ultimately judging me safe, enough. Together they move up the shore, down the shore, their sweet tender flightless bodies. Of course they are protective.
how do you feel about geese?
up next, perhaps: squirrels 🥰
